4AGZE Conversion

Postby Alex170984 » Thu Mar 16, 2017 3:31 am

Hi all,

I am in the process of purchasing a complete 4AGZE engine complete with loom, ECU, etc

Just wondering about camshafts...would I benefit from some HKS 264 cams or stick with stock?

Many thanks in advance

Alex

I have a 4agze turbo and put in HKS cams. 272 intake and 288 exhaust. It sounds like a beast in idle lol. I would suggest upgrading the valve springs as well. If you are sticking with the stock ecu and supercharger, I don't know if there would be much benefit from doing this though. What are your future build plans with the engine?

I believe my engine is coming with an uprated pulley, 176/180mm and I will be designing/installation air feed for the IC heatsoak issues i'll probably face. That's about it really.

In theory any modification you do to allow more air in and more air to leave should be beneficial especially with a forced induction build. Are you using the 4agze ECU?

Well it couldn't hurt, but personally I'd opt to get an upgraded ECU to get the full benefit of the mods. How much boost will you be running with that 176/180mm pulley? close to 20psi?

I have no idea to be honest. Probably around 14-15.

Okay well if you dont plan on running an aftermarket ecu just run the pulley and see how you like it. It might be good enough without the cams or ecu. It really just depends what you want out of the car.

Increased duration is not so desirable with a supercharged engine, as longer cams
increase overlap and allow some of the intake charge to escape to the exhaust
without being burned. On the other hand, increased lift does offer benefits. So if
you have adjustable cam pulleys you can close up the separation angle a little to
reduce overlap and still get the benefit of more lift.

There is a bit more to selecting cams for a supercharged engine than for N.A. You
can easily end up with less rather than more if you get it wrong. For the moment
I would suggest that you go with the above advice and stay with the stock cams
for a while. Then you can research the cam question in more depth to see what
works with the factory ECU, and what kind of gains are possible.

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for the replies.

Jon, that's what I was thinking! I'm going to stick with the standard camshafts for the time being. I'm going to be running a bigger pulley so I do not want to complete things by throwing in some cams that the ECU may have issues running.

My experience with aftermarket cams on my GZE'ised bluetop? The 256/264 HKS cams are really good. But the 101grind cams from Webcams Racing Cams are "da bomb" with supercharged 4AG engines.....

Of course, I installed a set of TRDUSA valve springs and gave the ports some cleanup.....

Thing is while the HKS cams do help to boost power overall, the 101 Webcams gives the 3500 to 6000 rpm range excellent oomph.

Would those cams work with the factory GZE ECU or do you need to go aftermarket ECU ?

Cam specs look good... lots of extra lift without going too long on the duration :)

Well Jondee, the MAP version can cope with that set of cams. There's still overfueling at the top end at every flatchange(powershift), you know. I've used that set for 13 months and without an intercooler. No problems other than a twisted axle in the diff and spiderwebbed stock flywheel at the end of that period......

oH.... and the idle is nervous, 1200rpm and the like. Also, never did the uprated pulley thing.

Hi,

I have an AFM 4AGZE converted AW11.

I have the larger 176mm fensport pulley but run on standard cams. I personally do not feel that it needs bigger cams. It idles really well and I have had higher lift and longer duration cams on my N/A before and it just didn't run right at idle. I did consider different cams in this but would rather spend money and time like yourself designing a better airflow and dealing with the heat soak. I will be considering running my IC in the boot or a GT4 charge cooler setup.

For all you other GZE folk out there....

You could always try and snag a pair of early large port cams (1984, 85, possibly some 86 4A's) supposedly the early blue tops had 240 duration instead of the late 16v 4A 232(?) Duration. Can't say for certain about the difference in duration but the early cams do have 7.5mm lift instead of 7mm in the later ones, I scored a pair of cams out of an 85 mr2 in the junk yard for $60 and compared. Now I'm not sure what benefit 0.5mm of lift will do, but for $60 its a super low risk option till i figure out what I want to do, so im going to give it a go. Haven't installed them yet as my car is still in the process of being put together, but I just figured it was another option to consider. Can't go wrong with stock parts on a stock ecu right?? lol ;)

I have some blue top cams in my garage I think but I have seen this as a low cost option instead of buying aftermarket.

BTW seeing that you want to use stock parts, what kind of clutch set you guys have?

I had stock 200mm and 212mm sets used from Fidanza, Toda etc. for the OEM flywheel. Only the one from Illegal Garage lasted more than six months. And I didn't drift my AE86 regularly, but I did dragracing a lot.

I have a corolla t-sport clutch 212mm, fits perfectly and is good value.
