help identifying wire

Postby 4agts89 » Fri Jan 27, 2017 11:31 am

hello to all, I blew my head gasket on my 89 corolla gts with 4age big port tvis. while taking apart the head i noticed that there is a single wire that isnt connected to anything. it is part of the distributor harness. it is a brown wire with a black tracer. does anyone know where it goes or have a service manual or wiring diagram? i have attached pictures to help describe the wire.

Oil pressure switch/sender? does your car have an oil pressure gauge? Does your oil light come on when you turn on the ignition? Looks like it was cut off somehow. try to find the other termination.

my oil pressure gauge works fine, i dont think there is a low oil light on the dash, i have the gts which has a different dash. i have looked around that area and found nothing missing or the termination end.

Only other thing I can think about would be a ground.

Does (or did) the car have AC? I was thinking it was a 1-wire plug, but it could be a 2-wire plug for the 4A-GE AC compressor.

So the wire is brown with a black stripe? That does sound like a ground wire.

My car does have ac and it works fine. The wire is brown with a black stripe going through it. It is covered in black heat wrap. I did also notice it on different model harnesses. The mr2 also has this wire in the distributor harness but the connectors are different.

Going a little off topic, Rouge, you might be onto something because my engine does get a low idle when the AC compressor is on, engine almost stalls when coming to a stop and I have already tried replacing the ac idle-up valve with no luck.

I'll check the ac compressor for missing connections. What exactly does the one wire plug do?

I'm not sure about the 4A-GE AC comp, but my 4A-FE AC comp has a single wire for the clutch to engage. I thought when I was looking through pics of the different AC compressors for 88-92 that some had two wires. Maybe someone replaced the comp with the "wrong one" and cut off a wire?
