4agze coil packs...no spark

Postby SlidewayzAE86 » Wed Aug 31, 2016 12:32 pm

Hi i was wondering if someone could help me.
I'm running ae92 4agze on megasquirt...im running the GM ignitor packs (running 2...1 for each coil pack)
There's power at ignitors and power at plug...when the key clicks over...theres a spark....when I try to crank it over....no spark.....im just not sure what's going...if you can help me that would be great.
Thank you

I'm gonna assume that this is a new setup and has not run before. So the basics are...

1. Megasquirt is set up to run in wasted spark with alternating outputs.
2. One MS output is wired to the trigger input of each igniter.
3. Each igniter output is wired to a GZE coilpack input.
4. 12V power is supplied to each igniter.
5. Each igniter is connected to ground.
6. The coilpacks are connected to the correct pair of cylinders.
7. MS is configured to trigger the igniters correctly.

If you have all that hooked up correctly and it does not spark on the correct two cylinders
or at the correct point in the engines rotation, it has to be a matter of changing the MS
ignition timing setup.

Disclaimer: I don't know about the GM igniters or MS, but the same basic principles apply
to all standalone engine computers.

Ok so if all is correctly hooked up....and still nothing....it could just be in the settings? And if the settings are incorrect that will make it to where it has no spark at all?

The MS setup procedure will be covered in the manual that came with the product.
You need to make sure that you have the correct manual as there are a number of
fuel and ignition related settings that need to be entered. Basic info required will be...

1. Crank sensor setup so that the ECU knows where the engine is in its cycle.
2. Cam sensor signal (most likely) so the ECU knows which igniter to trigger.
3. ECU ignition output set to alternate between igniter #1 and #2.
4. Basic timing synchronisation so that the spark on cylinder #1 occurs when
the piston on cylinder #1 is at around 15 deg BTDC.
5. Plug wires arranged so that coil #1 fires cylinders 1 + 4 and coil #2 fires
cylinders 3 + 2.

Getting a spark when you turn the ignition ON idicates to me that you probably have
something hooked up wrong. The spark is generated by the ECU sending a signal to
the igniter to tell it to switch the 12V supply to ground thru the coil. Just turning the
key on will not do this. I would suggest that you double check that you have 12V
where it is supposed to be, and ground where ground should be. If one of these is
reversed, it probably will mean no spark when you crank.

PS: Did this ECU run before on a 4AGE with the same kind of wasted spark setup ?
