4AF engine swap for something else
4AF engine swap for something else
Hi there, I have a 1988 toyota corolla 4 door sedan and I was thinking about swapping out the 4AF for something else. Are there any suggestions for what I can swap it out for and the transmission is automatic
Re: 4AF engine swap for something else
Many options. Anything that has been used to replace a 4AGE would work, or even a 4AGE. Probably easiest for you would be a 7AFE. Might be a plug and play. Have to check the ECU pinouts. Give you a bit more grunt. A 4AGE would be a lot of fun though.
One shot, one kill.

Re: 4AF engine swap for something else
The 88-89 years (except All-Trac and GT-S) had a 4AF -- carb not fuel injection. I think that means a fuel tank swap, or just the lines maybe? There's lots of info out there about swapping engines for the 6th gen Corollas. 7A-FE would require all the 7th gen engine & maybe some interior wiring, ECU, sensors, etc to run.

If it is injected and if you only want a little more power another option could be turbo.

Im just curious but can a either a 1jz or 2jz engine fit in my corolla? And if it can what changes would have to be made for it to work

not sure, but doubt it would physically fit. And then I can't imagine it fitting with a transmission.....
now.... if you were to build a tube chassis, and change the drive from fwd to rwd, you might be able to build something and then "drop" your AE92 chassis on top

Re: 4AF engine swap for something else
I'm in the very slow process of swapping a 4af out of an '88 Corolla fx, intending to replace it w/a 4age I have on hand. I've pulled the dash apart and I'm pulling the wiring harness out. the 4af is carb, the 4age is f.i. the wiring harness on the driver's side is the same in both models. the harness on the passenger side is almost completely different between the two. ecu, f.i. wiring, ignition, dist., alternator, all different.
