manual steering on ae82

Postby oldae82 » Sun Jan 17, 2016 3:50 pm

I have bought an '88 FX with the 4ac engine and manual steering. I'm going to convert it to a 4age. My questions is about the steering. I'm assuming the manual steering is a slower low-ratio, and that power steering would be a faster high-ratio steering. Is it worthwhile to convert to power steering or leave the manual and save a couple of hp?

I had an FX16 with power steering. Lost the belt and had to drive home without the pump. It wasn't hard to drive at all, so I'd guess the manual wouldn't be bad. As for ratios? Not sure if the manual has a different ratio than the power. There might be a difference in ratios between the lower model car than the higher model, FX compared to FX16 GTS. "performance" model y'know. If the ratio is a concern you can install the Quaife quick steer gears. Another thing to look into is the knuckle steering arms. Power and manual may be different length.
One shot, one kill.
