1987 Corolla FX16 GTS Help

Postby SolidSnack » Mon Sep 07, 2015 11:01 pm

Hi, I don't know a lot about cars and I need some help with this FX16.

I wanted to purchase this FX16 http://stockton.craigslist.org/cto/5198808675.html but there has been an issue with smog. The guy claims that everything is mechanically sound. But the smog tech wouldn't pass the car based off the visual inspection because he has an aftermarket intake. Apparently the car was in Los Angeles last year and it passed. But now it is in the Northern California area and it does not pass the visual inspection...

Does anyone know of the best solution to this problem?

Thank you.

Post a pic of your intake.

The only pic I have is the one from the ad. I was thinking just replacing it with a CARB exempt intake and it should be good right?

Yeah, that aluminum pipe gets a big thumbs down. I did that bit to replace the cracked stock tube and tried to get it accepted as a "repair", but they wouldn't have it. The air filter can pass, grey area there, it goes ahead of the engine control and any smog bits. IF you can get an EOed intake it would be better, but the stock intake pipe would be best.

There is no CARB exempt intake for these cars. You will have to replace it with the original intake arm, air box and filter. If you can't get a hold of the original one you can try to get one from a different year corolla and makeshift it to fit, that would work too. It just has to look factory.
