E58/51 Gearbox Swap into AE92 FXGT

Postby ARCambo » Fri Aug 28, 2015 4:10 am

Hi there guys.
I've been given a gearbox out of a BZ-G 20V Levin (E58/51? Haven't laid eyes on it yet to determine exactly) with LSD and am wondering how much trouble is it going to be to swap it out for my gearbox in my AE92 FXGT (C50 series).
I know I'm going to need the LSD driveshafts, but which ones exactly?
The AE101 and AE111 shafts RH side (long side) have a centre hanger bearing that the AE92 doesn't.
Is there any guru out there that has done this swap and knows all the tricks?
Cheers

To start with, you need to do a little due diligence on your part. Register over at http://www.toyodiy.com/
It has a cross referencing page to see which parts interchange & it helps to tremendously to have VIN numbers
to help your situation and not acquire parts you don't need. Good luck & post up your results!

I may be wrong...... The only "A" engines that came with E series transaxles was the supercharge versions. I believe all the N/A 4A engines came with C series transaxles.

Ae111 Superstrut came with the LSD E series box as factory. The non superstrut had the C series non LSD box from my knowledge.
All supercharged versions had the E series with LSD.

Pity Toyodiy no longer have the schematics to show the parts. Only list part numbers now.

I work for a Toyota dealer so have access to all the relevant parts info, I hope. All the part numbers do not cross over between models as the PN are all different, and there are differences between models within manufacturing years as well. They all come in different lengths as well. AE101 seem the closest to the AE92 from what I can find, but then the 101 have the centre hanger bearing for the long shaft.
All the research I have done so far hasn't indicated how people have got round the centre hanger difference.
Finding some shafts for a supercharged AE92 might be the easiest option.

I know the C160 6spd swap can be done as well, but again not much to indicate what shafts were used.

If you look up the part #'s without registering, no schematics show...

Check the gearing before you choose an 'E' series trans. The E58 has a bit better gearing than the E51, but both are a bit lower ratio (higher geared) than the C52 stock in the AE92. If you have a 20v, and got the trans with, the C56 has 1st and 2nd the same as the C52, but closer 3-4 gears. Check this little bit out http://bigmike.marlincrawler.com/forum/index.php?topic=45.0, might lend a bit of insight to your thoughts. Opinion, the 'E' series will kill your top and bog your bottom with a 20v.
One shot, one kill.

Woops, misread that, you don't have the 20v, just the trans. I believe the BZG, BZG-R, etc., had a 6-speed trans. If that's the case, BONUS! Axles from the donor would possible help though, not sure if the inner splines are the same, the outer would be. The passenger side axle from the BZG would be a 2 piece with an idler bearing bolted ton the block. I think they designed it that way to reduce the torque steer.
One shot, one kill.

The BZ-R had the 6spd LSD. THe BZ-G Superstrut had the 5spd LSD.
I will have to check the box when I see it to tell if it's a 51 or a 58. Apparently, from what I've read so far, the 51 has a alloy end housing where the 58 has a tin cover. The 51 is a bit stronger than the 58 as well.
Not too worried about ratios. The C52 in the car now is pretty low. RPMs at 100kph is 3500. If the rpms drop with the E series all good. A 6spd would be very nice. But with what I have planned a 6spd may be too weak. The E series are supposed to be much stronger.

Hopefully I can find out if I can fit a centre hanger to the block. Failing that it might be time to find a 20v BT to go in ...... mwhahaha
