I would be hoping it was steam! Easier to fix than wiring. First check your coolant level in the radiator. Is the overflow tank low or getting low? Check for coolant in the ducting, maybe the condensation drain. Those are the easiest things to check. But if the problem IS electrical don't operate the car until it is resolved. Smoke from wiring means there is trouble, and that trouble can turn into a burned out car! Not saying it will, but it can. Just a bulb going out won't generally cause smoking either. At least I've never seen it. Good luck!

Possible the rain got inside the car and screwed up the wiring. Even some heavy condensation could cause that problem. with the age of the car, 30 years or so, corroded, dirty and loose connections become more common. Water can magnify those problems. Your 'smoke' could have been steam from the water in the harness. Possibilities.... Still a good idea to check the wires.

Instrument cluster bulbs are 194 type for AE86, should be the same for AE92/82 as well

You can get replacement bulbs or LED (they fit the same socket)

You can get fancy or cheap with them, just make sure you get the short ones.

I have WLED-x-x in my cluster and its a bit dim.

The best one will probably be the WLED-xHP5 but is also about $5/peice.
WLED-x5 should be decent as well

the higher the degree angle, the more even the lighting is

I've got high power, 360° LEDs in my AE95 cluster:

Of course the camera couldn't take a decent pic in full darkness. The dash dimmer can cut down on that intense brightness. I've got every interior (except low gas alert) and exterior (except headlights) replaced with LEDs.
