I have a 1965 Lotus 23b that was set up to be a street car. The company that built it used a 1986 4AGE motor to keep costs down and reliability up.
The car has been sitting for several years and now I am trying get some gremlins worked out so it can be driven.
The mods:
The fuel system has an out to a low pressure fuel pump through a 1/2 gallon surge tank into a high volume pump to the injection system.
The fuel rail goes out to the top of the fuel cell.
The filler neck is vented directly to the charcoal canister that is connected to vacuum of the motor.
The filer neck is 18 inches away and level with the charcoal canister.
Problem I started sucking fuel into the charcoal canister.
I removed the canister thinking that I would just vent from the filler neck to a vented 1 quart catch can with a kn filter on the top. Completely open,
I drove the car for 2 miles very conservatively and when I got home I found about 1/2 of cup of fuel in the catch can. Its as off the tank pressurized and sent pressurized fuel out the vent in the filler neck.
HELP!
Lotus Race car with 4AGE MR2 motor ..Fuel problem

Picture of the fuel cell setup would help The end of the filler neck
would have to be submerged before you could force fuel out the vent.

What kind of fuel tank is the main tank? That is the one that is pushing the fuel out to the canister... or do I have something wrong???

can seem to load a pic,
Re: Lotus Race car with 4AGE MR2 motor ..Fuel problem
the fuel tank is small about 10 gal with the filler neck sticking out the side at the top. Imagin a little 2 seat race car with a little flat tank behind the front seats.
Its mid engine. I first though aggressive corning drove the fuel up into the canister, The last drive was just slow driving around.

Re: Lotus Race car with 4AGE MR2 motor ..Fuel problem
the car ran well before storing for about 5 years…starting to wonder if I have too much fuel pressure.. But why did it work before?
Re: Lotus Race car with 4AGE MR2 motor ..Fuel problem
Tank not over-filled ? Tried it with half a tank to
see if it makes a difference ?

Re: Lotus Race car with 4AGE MR2 motor ..Fuel problem
I had to replace parts of the fuel system that went bad.. They used a plastic surge tank that failed.
I have been looking at some diagrams and have noted a few things wrong with the way I am plumbed,
leaving the fuel rail going back to the 'fuel tank"..there is no pressure regulator and the line should be going from the fuel rail through a pressure regulator to the surge tank and then the surge tank has a line venting out to the fuel tank!
I will get a pressure regulator and gauge tomorrow and try it out.

Re: Lotus Race car with 4AGE MR2 motor ..Fuel problem
Be surprised if a fuel injected 4AGE actually ran without a fuel
pressure regulator. Typically you need about 34psi in the fuel rail,
and the factory regulator is vacuum compensated to maintain a
constant pressure differential between the rail pressure and the
manifold pressure. Maybe there is one hidden out of sight ?

Re: Lotus Race car with 4AGE MR2 motor ..Fuel problem
It seems to be fixed.
Changed:
replaced vented fuel tank to a foam filled non vented fuel cell with a race cap thats vented.
Added aftermarket pressure regulator and ran the lines into the surge tank and the then ran return back into cell.
So far no pressure in the fuel cell.
I need to find a shop to remove all non needed items since there is no smog and Tune,. I am sure there is some hidden power there.

None of the smog equipment has any effect on power.
