MR2 AW11

Postby DaanRutten » Sun Feb 23, 2014 4:01 pm

Hi all,
My name is Daan Rutten.
I am a proud owner of an 1987 toyota mr2 aw11.
I've done quite a bit of work on the car and still have..
But i am a guy with "need for speed"
I was wondering which options i had, is it better to tune my 4age 16v engine or put a blacktop 20v engine or some sort in it?
I did some research and stumbeld upon this link : http://www.billzilla.org/4agmods.htm, any one has experience tuning an 4age this way?
I was thinking if i would tune my stock 4age, i would start with the camshafts and an new ecu.
I am quite new to cars and engine's so i would appreciate any help and/or thoughts.
But i do have a friend who is an mechanic

How much power are you looking for?
What's your budget?

This build here is getting close to what I consider the limits of practical for an NA 4A.

He is running the stock ECU with an AFPR, custom pistons that I designed for him and Tomei poncams.

He is putting 145 Hp to the wheels which is a notable boost to power. all tolled he probably spent a little more than a 20v swap but now he has a fully rebuilt motor.

The 20v is cool, it does gain you VVT and a little newer head design but it also has some downsides like parts availability.

Then there is always the option of going turbo.

150+ WHP should be petty easy on the stock ECU and a healthy NA motor.
From there either upgraded pistons or upgraded ECU should allow you to push it a little further.
Once you have upgraded both the sky is really the limit.

Hi Daan,

I have one of the last mk1s registered in the middle of march 1990, just before the mk2 came out!

Over the last 18 months I have spent around £2500 on the engine and a £1000 on bodywork.

The engine has been completely rebuilt, using new 0.5 oversize pistons, 9.4 compression, cometic 1.0mm metal HG with a head skim to raise compression back up to 10.3.

I have cat cams 252/260 8.5/9.0 lift on standard valve springs and shims. All new main and big end bearings along with main and big end ARP bolts. Standard quality head bolts.

As well as a new water pump and all new gaskets I have a Fidanza lightened flywheel and an aluminium crank pulley.

I wanted to retain the originality of the Mr2 by not throwing in another engine, many ‘purists’ believe that the 4AGE is a waste of money and a 3STGE should be thrown in instead.

I currently have electrical issues, need the suspension aligned and need cam timing done again.

If you rebuild it yourself you get a lot more satisfaction from doing it rather than throwing in another engine without knowing its history or its reliability, unless you strip n rebuild that of course. It also depends on how much money you have too.

I’m hoping mine will put out 150-160 hp, but haven’t been able to give it a good test as the suspension is misaligned and it’s a tooth out on timing. It definitely feels a lot pokier though!

How would you feel about a 7AGE? The extra torque in the AW11 would be easy to plant. Might lose a tad on the top end, but the powerband is more useable than a 4AGE.
One shot, one kill.
