DIST. FUNCTION
I have a 4age. The distributor leaks oil through the interior seal. The engine runs OK, but the oil is a mess on the engine. I have another dist., which is dry internally- i.e. I don't see any oil residue in it. I tried it on the engine, and the engine wouldn't run. The only joy I got was just as I ...

Thanks for the suggestion. I wanted to have and OEM so the dash would look right, but I could leave the original as a placeholder and wire in a new one somewhere else.

Thanks to both of you. I swore when I bought this car I would rein in my obsessive tendencies. I'll go with inspections.
Why a belt instead of a chain? Economy? Noise? Overhead cams?

timing belt visual
I have bought an '88 ae92 gts. the previous owner had no idea if/when the timing belt had been replaced. the shop manual implies (by saying to mark the direction of rotation if one intends to reuse the timing belt) that one can visually inspect the belt and, if satisfied with its appearance, let it ...

Re: wheel offset
Does anybody have any real-world experience with 16" wheels on the fx? Tire Rack will accept a return on a tire/wheel combo, but since they don't advise using them on the fx, I'd have to a) not have driven on them, b) pay a restocking fee, and c) pay return freight.

Thanks for the advice. One advantage of the fx is its lightness, so that any torque is noticeable. A/C is gone, power steering goes next. Need to start eating my Wheaties.

Re: Things I should know about the FX16?
Gotcha'. I saw one fx16 in a junkyard, and now I can't remember if it was a gts, that had solid front discs, and I wondered if it was a production change. As light as the car is, I don't see why a solid disc would be detrimental, and it should be lighter.

t-vis butterflies
I'm trying to build up a mild n/a 4age. Cams are tomei 264/ 8.1. Reading Bill Sherwood, (God, that blue background makes my eyes water) he indicates that one might as well disconnect the t-vis, because the effect of the opening in negligible with this cam spec. Should I remove the butterflies from t...

I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as jondee in the specifics he's citing, but I do know from what work I've done that you can't skip steps and make assumptions. You have to know that a certain system is working correctly before you can move to the next system. If you don't know, then you've left an en...

I'd like to go to a 16" wheel and a 205/45-16 tire on my '87 fx16 (ae82). I currently run a 195/50-15, and the tire in the rear is about a finger's width from rubbing the strut where the spring rests. I'm trying to figure the offset on my current 15" x 6" wheel, thinking that a greate...

You have so many different symptoms that it can be difficult to isolate individual causes. It would be hard to dismiss jondee's assumption of a blown head gasket with out proof otherwise. Best bet is to get your base lines- compression within parameters, timing correct, no flooding (trumpets means c...

Re: '88 gt-s struts
Well, thank you! How difficult is this? I have the normal assortment of hand tools, and I can rent a spring compressor. Is that enough? Do the units complete units, less spring, that are listed for the rear actually fit? I see that the ae101 strut has the brake hose mounting flange down low, unlike ...

'88 gt-s struts
I know this isn't a 'new' topic, but I've read and searched and asked about struts until I don't know whether to poop or do loops. I have an '88 corolla gt-s coupe. It's in serious need of struts, front and rear. The rear ones seem pretty straight forward and readily available. For the fronts I keep...

Thank you. One supplier has asked for a vin to identify the correct axle shaft. The car that's currently on the road has a 6-bolt flange on the passenger side shaft, and a plug-in (? no flange, just the splined shaft inserted into the transmission) on the driver's side. Does this mean that they're i...

cv axle shaft
I have an '87 ae82 (fx16) for which I'm trying to find a passenger side cv axle shaft. The output shaft of the transmission has a three-eared flange with a total of six mounting bolts. The auto parts stores here keep insisting that an eight-bolt flange will fit. It won't. On ebay I see two part numb...

AE82 MANUAL TRANSMISSION
I'm pulling an engine from what appears to be an '88 ae82 4age. I went to pull the axle shafts, but they're not like my '87- they're not held to the output shafts by 6 bolts. they appear to locked inside the transfer case by keepers, and I don't know how to get to them. My shop manual for the '87 sh...
