I was hoping to see you attack one of the 2nd gen 4A-FE heads someday. I have one sitting atop the 7A-FE I bought to make a 7A-G(T)E, and wondered if it would be better or worse than the 1st gen head for building up a turbo'd economy engine.
Those 2nd gen intake ports are so steep.

Those look like smallport pistons. Are the piston domes coated (OEM or aftermarket)?

I was also able to look at the STL files at college. Very interesting! I didn't have time to get a proper screen cap of the image, but I took a couple pics with my phone. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/garbageboxlove/cars/ae101-piston_burdickjp.jpg~original http://img.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: 88 gts with bad pickups
All of the 16 valve (USA market) distributors should be a round body. But the two plugs coming out of it, there are two kinds. Definitely take pics of stuff that you remove. It's also a god idea to "bag & tag" your parts. When I dropped my wagon's subframe, I used some plastic trays to...

Re: 88 gts with bad pickups
I'm trying to remember, and I can't... are the 88-89 GTS distributor plugs round and green like the AE86 has? Are all the MR2 dizzy plugs that round & green type? I know the 90-91 smallport distributor has somewhat flatter, smaller, grey colored plugs. And the TPS had two versions, squarish and ...

Re: 88 gts with bad pickups
I think he means the 4A-FE engine, being in the same engine family as the 4A-GE, it would bolt up to the GTS trans. But the wiring is completely different, and that would be a lot of work to make a downgraded engine run in the GTS. It would be better to fix this problem, or if going with another eng...

When you get custom axles made, can they basically create an entire axle from scratch (and I presume, using high quality parts)?

I'm not sure about the 4A-GE AC comp, but my 4A-FE AC comp has a single wire for the clutch to engage. I thought when I was looking through pics of the different AC compressors for 88-92 that some had two wires. Maybe someone replaced the comp with the "wrong one" and cut off a wire?

Does (or did) the car have AC? I was thinking it was a 1-wire plug, but it could be a 2-wire plug for the 4A-GE AC compressor.
So the wire is brown with a black stripe? That does sound like a ground wire.

But I bought a 100 ohm rheostat because of using LEDs. You may not need one rated that low for standard filament bulbs. I don't know what resistance would work for those.

Nice find! What year is it? I wonder if GM ran out of their "plain" valve covers and had to use the Toyota 1600 ones on the exhaust side. Or if it's the other way around, and the early models might have had them. Interesting in any case. Does the ex side cover have the three mounting tabs ...

Re: Heinous Rodknock from 1986 Mr2
If it's the original 1986 engine, it's probably an early bigport (40mm rods, not a fully counter-weighted crank) aka a "Bluetop" (never call a 16v by a color, it's just inaccurate and confusing). Removing the oil pan would reveal which crank you have. Even going by year to identify the eng...

Re: Small Port Oil Drain
I thought the head & block drain was mostly because of a FWD setup, which was the only way hi-comps were available from Toyota. When making a hard right(?) turn in a FWD, the oil would pool into that end of the head, so the drain helped move the pooled oil back into the oil pan to prevent oil st...

Not to thread-jack this. Sirdeuce, on that note, would it be OK to ceramic coat something like an alt or dizzy housing? That way it has a little more thermal protection than the plain aluminum, but can still have its vents & openings cleared.

Re: Alternator on the exhaust side...
The 4A-FE bracketry places the alt in roughly the same place as that pic above, and they seem OK being there. But the FE exhaust manifold has heat shielding panels, and the FE alt sits a bit higher than it can with a GE (because of the GE dizzy being on the head like it is). Maybe you can make up a ...
