No surprise to discover that Toyota appear to have followed the rule above as the standard 4age cams are 7.56mm lift less valve clearance.
Maybe Burton are quoting an 8 valve engine that would have much larger valves to start with ?

Re: Next goal: 200hp
Bigger valves would be my choice as you would be unlikely to make the most of higher lift cams on standard size valves. If you research "valve curtain area" you will see that there is a formula for valve diameter vs lift. There is some pretty in depth info on curtain area but the simple gu...

Locking tabs for the ring gear bolts.
Some would say use Loctite (or similar) but Toyota chose to use locking tabs for a reason.

The AEM ecu is happier when it reads a Hall signal rather than the Magnetic setup from the 4age distributor so you would be better off running it with a trigger wheel off of the crank pulley. I have a basic setup for the V1 ecu that will start and run the engine I may also be able to help with pinou...

My research suggests the green small port injectors are 250cc, based on the Nippon Denso part number and various online resources that claim to have flow tested or have original documentation to go from. Hope you understand that I'm not suggesting that you are wrong and if you are correct I will re...

There is some confusion over this, no doubting they are high impedence but it is the cc thing.
Some say 235cc and others 250cc
Does anyone know the answer to this ?

Hi, Itb's are not necessary to get 160hp and some people have managed it on a stock ecu although a standalone would probably be best. Personally I prefer the redtop "small port" engine with a modified small port inlet manifold and if you want to keep costs down you can run this engine on a...

Re: bad gauge cluster possibly?
Does 'everything' include any Earthing points ?
You could try gently 'wiggling' the connector(s) with the ignition on to see if anything happens to the gauges, I think that the fuel gauge may even work without the ignition.
The speedometer will continue to work as it is mechanically driven.

Re: A strange Question
There are plenty of aftermarket flywheels available and in my opinion there is nothing like the retro 'ping' from a steel one when starting the engine up ! Just be aware that there are different diameter clutches on 4age engines. 200mm for AE86 and MR2 normally aspirated. All the 4age flywheels are ...

Re: 4age 20v Throttle Body Sync problem
The first thing would be to check that the ecu can read a wideband signal.
If it can't then you would be best off fitting a stock narrowband sensor and reading the AFR with your Denso through the wideband sensor already fitted.
Narrowband simulation from the wideband is also an option.

I guess it depends where in the World you are, certainly in the U.K the wiring harness would be the most valuable of the parts you listed followed by the inlet with TPS then the ecu. Total value in U.K Pounds would be approx. £120 or about 190 U.S Dollar for everything listed. If the engine is a 4ag...

The best way to find this kind of fault is to eliminate one component of the system at a time. Starting with the master cylinder block every outlet, make sure there is no air in this part of the system and then try the pedal. If the pedal is good move onto another part of the system and do the same....

thanks jondee. Yes the intake is cut and shut with the USDM smallport TB. IACV is removed and it is idling at 900 rpm. You can eliminate the alternator and water pump by running the engine (from cold and a short time) with the drive belt removed. This is a real long shot, I had adjustable cam pulleys that were not very well made and although I fitted the bolts tight and the pulley felt tight on the camshaft, when th...

If you retard the ignition and there is less noise then it may be worth performing the following test. With the engine running at a fast idle and the ignition timing set approx 16 degrees BTDC, remove with insulated pliers No.1 plug lead and rev the engine to try to get the engine to make the noise....

Could be bearing knock and it sounds like small end bearings. Given that any advancing the timing has made it worse would kind of confirm it. There is one thing that would be worth checking and that is that your crank pulley is not allowing the outer timing ring part to slip on the rubber insulator....

Re: 256 cams with 16 valve stock ECU
They will run ok with stock cam wheels and ecu.
You will almost certainly need to adjust for correct valve clearance though.
Best cam timing can ideally be set up on a rolling road dyno using adjustable cam wheels.
