Very interesting. Thank you. What does that tube from valve cover to manifold actually do?

Re: blue smoke

Thank you both. The reason the engine was torn down was loss of compression. The cause was broken lands on all four pistons; the land between 2nd compression and oil wiper. Still don't know the cause of that problem. The engine block had been bored .20 over and the hone marks were still in the bores...

I have a 4ag I've recently put back together. I used Tomei 264.8.15 cams, intake and exhaust. I used weisco pistons, used, with rings, rods, and new rod bearings. The seller of the pistons was unsure of the compression ratio, thought it might be 10:1. He said the engine he'd installed them in spun a...

Re: BIGPORT PISTONS

If you would I'd appreciate it. I don't feel I ask more of the engine than it's designed to do- no long romps at high rpm or such like. I have changed the cams to a slightly more aggressive profile. I'm hoping that's not a problem. The wrist pins are 20 mm diameter.

Re: BIGPORT PISTONS

oldeskewltoy, I think you nailed it. The pistons are slotted behind the oil ring, not drilled as in your example of a stronger design. They all broke on the intake side, if that information makes any difference. Highest load? It's been a long time since I bought them, but I believe they were 10:1 co...

BIGPORT PISTONS

I need a set of pistons for a largeport 4age, 81.5 bore, with rings and wrist pins if possible. 20 mm wrist pins.

I bought a set quite some time back. Every piston has broken lands between the middle ring and oil ring. The "why" I don't know yet, but the pistons are goners.

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but ask I will. I'm looking for a Nippondenso relay # 056700-6210, which does not seem to be available in the U.S. I ordered one through Aliexpress, and in only 40 days the wrong item arrived. Anybody got a source? I have three of them that don't work. The flaw ...

All right- back to interchanges. Looking at pictures of 6 speed transmissions, what I can see of the intermediate housing (bell housing) looks quite similar to my 5 speed, with the exception of the starter on the intake side of the engine. Questions: will the six speed transmission bolt up to the fi...

Re: transmission interchange

So, I got a used 5 speed from an "FX16". Not. It apparently came from a Nova, and the gear ratios are not suited to the 4age. It works, and I might get 78 mpg on the Interstate, but that's not what I want from the car. I really don't know how to research the transmissions, and could use so...

Re: transmission interchange

Thanks for the info. Looking at photos of other transmissions, the six-speeds look as if the starter is on the opposite side from mine. The photos of the SOHC transmissions look the same in the bell housing, but the the crossover charts say they won't fit. The one I have, that's sick, is a c52. Nobo...

All I've seen so far is photos. The engine is longitudinal, so I assumed rwd. I don't know the various iterations of the Tercel. I'll try attaching a link to the ad.

Anybody ever try putting a 4age in a Tercel? Lord love me, I'm looking at an '87 Tercel with what looks like a 4ac in it, and wondering what a4age would do. Would the drive train hold it if it wasn't pushed too hard? All this is pictures so far. I don't believe it's 4wd.

Re: AE110 steering rack

manual racks are slower because of their ratio, which allows for puny human muscles. Take off the power steering pump. Except for parking situations, it's pretty easy to deal with, and fairly quick. I had a '65 Sunbeam tiger with manual steering (all they came with, actually), and a 90 degree turn d...

Re: What's inside the 4AGE 16V TPS ??

On my ae82 with the 4age, on and off low throttle is accompanied by a lurch, as best as I can describe it. It's either accelerating or closed throttle. I've adjusted the TPS by the service manual's resistance method, but I expect my adjustment is off a fraction. Any suggestions?

Free to a good home: AE82 fx16 gts front seats, the fancy ones. In very good condition. I don't fit them any more. I'll send pictures to anyone who sends me an email address. I'm in southwest Va., off I-81, between Roanoke and Bristol. Not sure they're worth shipping, but I will if you pay.

Re: 1.8 VVT-Li in an ae82

Having spent some time now with the VVT-l engine, I'm kinda disappointed. It has the power, but it doesn't have the spirit. It's dead below 3 grand, and noisy and thrashy above that. 6th gear is pretty much useless unless you live in Iowa or some similarly flat place. Fuel economy is so-so; 26 to 30...

I have an '87 fx16 (ae82). I have an annoying sound/feel in the steering. It's not apparent when first starting out, but after about 30 minutes of driving I can feel a "tick tick" in the steering wheel and hear a rattle. The noise/feeling does not seem to be related to suspension travel or...

Short history: I did a rebuild on my 4age in an '87 ae82. Installed a new water pump in the process. No overheating problems in break in period.
