Re: steering noise

Manual rack ?
Not that it matters much, pre-load on the rack bar is adjustable and the bearing in the end of the rack is replaceable.
Have someone 'wiggle' the steering wheel while you listen out for the noise.

Re: Keep the bigport? 7age build

A lot depends on the induction system, I would think the TVIS bigport inlet would struggle a bit with cams, a longer stroke and 160hp
The smallport inlet would cope better and you could get away with shorter duration cams.

Re: 4AGZE 02 sensor

Check the loom plug to see how many wires are there.
You can use a generic sensor and just replace the plug with the one that fits your loom.

Re: Weird 4A-GE idle problem

A couple of things.
Does the idle increase if you add electrical load, heater fan etc ?
Check the spark plugs immediately after the idle has dropped to its lowest, the engine may be running very rich. Is there an O2 sensor fitted ?

Re: 20v 4AGE ST Misfire/miss.

Have you done a log with the AEM and checked for timing errors ?
AEM EMS is notoriously noise sensitive and if you have used any of the original wiring from the CAS to the ecu it should be replaced. Driving ok below 3000rpm is a classic symptom.

Re: Swapping Control Arms for a little more Negative Camber

Best bet is to try it and as your car is lower you may find that one of the bump steer adjuster kits would work to dial out any bump steer. As my car is slightly higher than standard I need raise the steering balljoint and none of the available kits appear to allow for this. Remember that adding cas...

Re: Swapping Control Arms for a little more Negative Camber

I have adjustable LCA's and from memory 10mm does add about 1°negative camber. Two things to consider, one is obvious and that is to make sure you have enough thread adjustment on your steering tie rod ends. The other less obvious, make sure the alignment includes the caster setting. Lengthening the...

If 16°is maximum ignition timing advance you might want to check camshaft timing, you will probably find that the inlet camshaft is too far advanced.

Re: Brake line leak on hardline @ prop valve

Could be vibration if the brake line is long and not supported anywhere close to the connection.
If there is no evidence of corrosion near the connection you could try tightening the nut.

Re: Rwd 16v rear coolant neck. Repair suggestions. (Pics)

I removed my "T" extension from the rear coolant neck and just taped threads into the aluminum body for a fitting. Davew7 Great suggestion. The ridge at the end is called a 'swage' or 'swaged end' Samco can supply a 'T' hose that would work fine and to keep it securely in place you could ...

Samco can supply a 'T' hose that would work fine and to keep it securely in place you could use two Mikalor screw clamps.

Re: rear tire skipping under hard braking

So last night I jacked up the front of my car and turned the front wheels by hand and one side had noticeable drag and this was caused by the brake piston not returning correctly.
The OP might want to try the same test before doing all the other stuff stated above !

Re: rear tire skipping under hard braking

A blown damper would show the particular corner effected 'dipping' under hard braking, especially at the front. Under hard cornering the car would feel different when turning different directions. The best test is to do as suggested above, soften the settings but do one damper at a time. 3.5° is a l...

Re: rear tire skipping under hard braking

If you suspect a side to side brake imbalance always check the non-working side, the side that it veers away from. Just to make sure I got this correct in my head. If i car turns to the left under braking, then I need to check the passenger side? Yes, I can lock the brakes in straight line hard bra...

Re: rear tire skipping under hard braking

What happens under hard straight line braking: Steering pull ? Wheel locking? Front diving ? There are so many things that could make this happen, taking the steering out of the equation may help to diagnose the problem earlier. Negative camber has a big effect on braking, reducing braking grip when...

Re: AE86 16V - How to set ignition timing...

The timing is locked so there is no fluctuation thus making setting it easier and more accurate.
There may also be a 'failsafe' in as much as any error codes would show before the timing is set.

Yup, yup. Thanks sham. Do you know why the factory nuts have that extended flange/lip? Clamping force and also related to 'hardness' of the fastener, ordinary flat washers cannot exert the same force as hardened steel washers. Toyota do stuff right, that's how they roll. Read this book for more inf...

I keep considering buying one of these gearboxes but each time I'm put off by the very tall 1st gear ratio. Whilst I realise that a lot of customers will be using the gearbox with different axles my car is an AE86 with a T series axle and final drive ratios lower than 4.778 are expensive, short live...

Self locking is achieved with controlled deformation of part of the thread.
