Re: 4AG 20V Charcoal Canister eliminated

You have to vent or you'll run into problems. What happened to me is you'll have fuel puking out the gascap when the pressure rises high enough, which it will. You can avoid filling gas too high, but it'll still be a problem. What I did was instead of the charcoal canister, I installed a relief and ...

Re: Clutch selection help

You should be able to use either flywheel, but 200 clutch with 200 flywheel, 212 clutch with 212 flywheel. Can't interchange 212 clutch with 200 flywheel, or vice versa. Any reason why you want to go with 200 flywheel? Outer diameter is the same. I went to blacktop flywheel, which is 212 and then sw...

Re: silvertop in an ae82

Thanks for the info and the link. I did a whoop-de-do rebuild on a stock 4age, and what could go wrong did go wrong. I'm looking now at getting a jdm silvertop and installing that. I was thinking I could use it entire, deleting the a/c. I see the starter is under the intake. Does it need to be move...

Re: silvertop in an ae82

There should be fair amount of info. Original transmission will mount so if you do that, the mounts are the same. The front engine (right side) mount keep the 20v, it should bolt up. If you're trying to fit the 6 spd then I can't help you with that. Oh, look for bellhousing that has the starter hump...

Re: Have to crank a long time for engine to start when cold.

Your fuel pump died? Did you change the fuel filter too? 3 year old fuel is pretty certain to be bad and gummy. Change and clean what you can. You might consider sending your injectors to a cleaning and testing service, they'll be able to quantifiably tell you if they are clogged. The services are q...

Re: Hi, 20v st (bt electronic)

OK, I might have been exaggerating with $5, I'd have to go look at my Digikey order, but it wasn't very expensive. Labor and skill is where the cost is. For someone whos done a fair amount of basic electronics hobby work, it should be pretty easy, the ECU circuit board traces are pretty big. Modern ...

Re: Hi, 20v st (bt electronic)

Open that ECU and look inside, ASAP. I don't know about BT, but ST ECU has very high probability of bad/leaky capacitors. 2 out of 2 for me. It causes all kinds of weird behavior, but if you catch it before it damages the board, it's like a $5 fix for someone who can do pretty basic desolder and sol...

Thanks. I wish I knew more authoritatively. I picked one up, but I can't tell if it really works better than the 16v one or if its just wishful thinking.
Itd be nice if someone out there has one and measured it for us.

20V ST AFM specs

Does anyone have the actual ohm specs that the 20V silvertop AFM is supposed to be? Been searching around the web but nothing. I read that you can use the Camry 3SFE AFM as a substitute, but it would be nice to measure and compare. I made the mistake of using my original 4AGE one, it runs, but not v...

Re: Things I should know about the FX16?

You still around? I'm curious about your suspension, howd it work out? Update on my FX16, I cannot recommend welding your engine mount solid. I did it because the stock rubber kept tearing. Making it solid created more problems, eventually cracked my bellhousing and snapped bolt in it. Had to take i...

Re: Could a newer Corolla ECU be made to work?

I suppose anything is possible, but I would think it would be so much work that it would be just as easy and better to use a standalone. I imagine the flow rate and fuel maps for a 20v would not be close to a 2001 Corolla. The rev cut in the 20v is quite high, the 2001 Corolla I would figure to be l...

Re: Info on swapping a 20v into an '87 FX16 GT-S?

Yes. They have varying levels of custom shafts. You can have just the center shaft made from high strength steel but retain stock joints and ends, or go full custom from end to end. I can't remember exactly why, I think they didn't have a source for the end joint at the wheel end so we used some I g...

I'm using C52 5 speed transmission that comes in the FX16, rebuilt with MR-2 gears and new bearings. Bell housing scrounged from later junkyard corolla that has the dual starter humps. The MR-2 gears are all the same. KAAZ 1.5 LSD. For driveshafts I ended up getting DriveShaft Shop to make me custom...

Re: Info on swapping a 20v into an '87 FX16 GT-S?

Oh, the ST is supposedly thought to be a little stronger than BT. I think BT internals were lightened. If your planning turbo, I'd think you want to use the ZE block though. The ST is proving to be quite the screamer after its rebuild. Been driving to break it in this week and did a couple full blas...

Re: Info on swapping a 20v into an '87 FX16 GT-S?

Putting a 20v into FX16 is pretty much the same as an AE92, I just finished reinstalling completely rebuilt 20v into mine. Transaxles interchange so you could use existing transaxle, except for one complication the starter. The 20V starter is on the intake side, which really is better, because of cl...

Sorry about smog, it's the main reason I won't live in cali. In Oregon and Washington you rarely fail emissions test, and when you do there are ways of beating the system. When I was in Hawaii (where they have very strict rules), I always had a "hookup" shop when I had messy Hondas runnin...

The FX hatches tend to work their way to enthusiasts. The sedans were just considered economobiles and tended to be treated as such. My FX16 is a awesome fun rallyX vehicle. I keep breaking driveshafts though.

Skies the limit on the engine.
Aftermarket on anything else for AE82 you'll need to get creative. About the only thing you can find is SuperPro poly bushings. Suspension there are a few kits that might fit. Front brakes you can fit on AE92 disc & calipers if you ditch the dust shield.

Re: 20v oil type question

20v's also seem to be known to consume oil. One of my speculations is that the 20v arrangement causes more valve stem wear, I had to have my bushings replaced on my rebuild. There's also the warning to not use the OEM style oil cooler as the 20v needs higher oil pressure to run properly. So I don't ...

Sounds like the rack might be worn, but check your tie rods. All my corollas have had worn ends, either outer and inner or both. Gotcha'. I saw one fx16 in a junkyard, and now I can't remember if it was a gts, that had solid front discs, and I wondered if it was a production change. As light as the car is, I don't see why a solid disc would be detrimental, and it should be lighter. I think that might have been a regular FX? ...

That would be my assessment too, short the diagnostic connector and TPS doesn't matter. If with the diag shorted and your timing mark is still bouncing around, it's likely a problem with dizzy. Once I rebuilt one of my Dizzy's with new bearing and seals, my timing became rock solid. The TPS could af...

Lesse if I remember right. Measure overall width of wheel, divide by two (get half of the measurement). Measure distance from inside edge of wheel to the mounting face.
