Re: OST-093: My, My, Mystery
Is it a trick of the camera, or does the forged piston have a little less clearance for the oil squirters? If you have the forged pistons ceramic coated (skirts & domes), assuming that also changes the piston to wall clearance. I think ( bad memory) that someone told me to add 10 thousandths whe...

Re: OST-093: My, My, Mystery
The first 4A-GE I bought was from a 1987 GTS coupe (built in 12/1986 from the VIN). It also has those untapped holes on the head (for the FWD stiffener bracket).

Re: Anyone knows the name of this hose and the part #?
I suppose it's better to have the return hose running from the catch can to the intake, than to just plug up the fitting on the intake and vent the catch can? Like the intake is drawing air out of the crankcase, which is necessary?

Not necessarily a problem, per se, but I could have sworn the avatars used to be to the left of the posts. Currently they're to the right of the posts. Is there a way to change the avatar location? I didn't see anything in the control panel.

Re: Anyone knows the name of this hose and the part #?
That hose is for venting the crankcase gases. The 4AGE hose dose not have a PVC valve in it. [Positive Ventated Crankcase.] It is not a special hose! Any hose with a tight fitting ID can be used as a replacement. Does air ever get pulled into the head through that hose? Just wondering, as the 4A-FE...

Re: 4A-FE pistons question
The 4A-FE rods are bent. Probably someone hydrolocked the engine. I use the block as a mock-up, since my wagon never originally came with a 4A-GE of any kind, and this 2nd gen 4A-FE block has a notch along the oil pan like my original 4A-FE. I guess I should clarify, I measured the bearings in the b...

40mm rod bearings question
I'm posting this here because it's something relating to the 4A-FE and the early 4A-GE. Both gens of 4A-FE rods and of course early bigport GE rods have 40mm big ends. But the bearing part numbers are different. Any ideas why that is? Mark 1 bearings used as examples. 4A-FE: 13041-15030-01 (supersed...

Re: 4A-FE pistons question
Bumping this up. I edited my first post since I measured an old set of 2nd gen 4A-FE rods that I have (can't use, no good). But I'd still like to know... what is the wrist pin size of the 1st gen (88-92) 4A-F(E) piston / rod? I don't want to have to pull & tear apart one of my two running 4A-FEs...

Re: TVIS inlet
I looked at the manifold from a Protege' 5 [...] Any way, this mani has 2 intake tracts, separated from each other, with a set of butterflys closing off the larger tract. Intake tuning has been around since people started racing cars. There is no argument that you can improve VE in certain parts of...

3 injectors??
Did I miss something, or:
1) is that an aftermarket dipstick?
2) does that trigger wheel bolt onto a stock crank pulley?

Yes, you will need: • manual rack • brackets & bushings x2 • firewall shroud x2 • steering column (all I've found are non-tilt) ** • knuckles are supposed to be different, I have a set but never compared them to my PS knuckles ** If you have a tilt column with power steering, you will need to ex...

Re: manual rack
Base models did, at least for sedans. I have one that I pulled from a 1989 Geo Prizm. It's more turns lock to lock than a PS rack, but I like having less to maintain or be in the way in the engine bay.

Re: Any tricks to replacing the oil pan?
I'll never understand why aftermarket companies (like Fel-Pro) haven't made a proper rubber oil pan gasket for these engines. I found this company that makes silicone oil pan gaskets. Maybe someone can reach out to them? I'd buy a notched block (20v) version. https://realgaskets.com/product/oil-pan-...

I'd like to know if someone with AW11 manual rack mount bushings can measure them. For the D shaped one, I'd like to know the top-bottom and front-rear dimensions, inside and outside. The round one, the ID & OD. This is a poly set I had found when searching. But I couldn't get the specs, not eve...

Re: Dumb question time, of wrist pins & modifying pistons
Thanks Jon, for some reason in my searching I hadn't seen Teflon buttons. I'll have to call up some machine shops in my area (few that there are) and ask about this. I'm sure there won't be anything off the shelf. I think I'd rather have this set up than trying to have a steel bushing made for the r...

Re: Dumb question time, of wrist pins & modifying pistons
I hadn't heard of buttons, or I'd forgotten about them. It's an interesting idea, although from one article I just read, they sound like they're intended to be used for race engines (torn down often). It seems that they basically sit in the space where the pin enters the piston, and the cylinder wal...

Re: Dumb question time, of wrist pins & modifying pistons
Thanks Jondee. The rods I'm thinking about this for are Honda, which all use press fit wrist pins. There's a little bit of old school upgrading for their D16 engines (very skinny rod) using a B18A/B / B20 con rod (more substantial rod). Some material is shaved down on the big end to make it narrower...

Dumb question time, of wrist pins & modifying pistons
This is probably more of a general engine question, although the 4A-GE uses both types of wrist pin attachment. From looking at parts diagrams, it appears that the early 18mm press fit wrist pins are pressed directly into the steel of the con rods. The later 20mm floating wrist pins ride inside of a...

Re: OST-070: 7AGE for an N2 Levin
I'll have to remember these mods for the 7A-GE I want to build. Speaking of oiling and mods, would it be worthwhile to smooth out or polish the inner section of the block behind where the oil filter sits? And to radius that hole where the oil flows out and into the filter?

OK, I remember now. That was the block that was restored to be like it was right off the factory floor, valve covers and all.
I'll have to think about what I want to do with my blocks. One machine shop I talked to said that they don't paint blocks.

Re: Smallest wheel size that will fit over rear discs?
Thanks guys. Although I have to wonder if the AE92 GT-S rear discs, with calipers and all, are the same size? It looks like the AE92 rear rotors are 1cm larger in diameter than the AE86 ones. This all spawned from hoping to buy a set of Tercel wagon 13" aluminum rims (square design) for one of ...

Smallest wheel size that will fit over rear discs?
I was wondering, for those of us with a sedan or wagon (obviously non-GT-S) who want to do a rear disc brake swap. Or for those with the 88-89 GT-S with the smaller front brakes. Will 13" wheels clear the GT-S rear discs, calipers, etc? It looks like the USDM GT-S came with 14" wheels in a...

Thanks Jon. I didn't know an aftermarket ECU would be able to compensate for the distributor being slightly different. USDM distributors are definitely different than the ones you described. They both seem to have 4 and 1 pickups inside. I guess this will turn into a weekend project (on some weekend...
