Re: AE86 16V - Alternator Wiring Basics...

If you take a wire from an ignition switched source to the Charge Warning Light (whick incorporates a diode, so is polarity sensitive), and then from the CWL to the Charge Indicator Light output on the alternator, it will work. The regulator provides a path to ground when the ignition is switched ON...

Re: AE86 16V - Alternator Wiring Basics...

L= Does this go to light that has other side to switched voltage? Since you have a 4AGE you can ignore the charge relay, the wire marked 4AC and the ground connection. All you are left is a loop between the Ignition and charge fuses. The Charge fuse has no voltage until the engine is running. I hav...

Re: Hesitation at low rpms

The ECU water temp sensor behind the head is the green one. The brown one is the cold start injector time switch. The temp sensor is a thermistor, so basically pretty reliable. The test is to check the resistance of the sensor and compare with the graph in the service manual. Kind of awkward to get ...

Re: Hesitation at low rpms

Could be fuel or timing. Since I'm guessing that you don't have a WBO2 gauge, it's probably best to just check a few of the basics... - Pull the plugs and check for colour/condition. - Set the engine to TDC compression stroke on #1 cylinder by lining the crank pulley notch with the timing cover zero...

Re: Why do I need a Fuel Pressure Regulator ?

Hmm... something doesn't seem quite right... it's like you are running out of fuel for some reason. If your WBO2 goes full lean the engine the engine should no longer be running... the limit for lean combustion is around 18:1 and most widebands read to around 22:1 AFR. Air-To-Gasoline Stoichiometry ...

Re: Why do I need a Fuel Pressure Regulator ?

- What happens if you put the bigport injectors back in ?
- What colour are the plugs ?
- Does the exhaust smell rich at idle ?
- When you pull the dipstick can you smell gas in the oil ?

Just checking :D

Re: Why do I need a Fuel Pressure Regulator ?

Doesn't sound right to me :? I would have expected that setup to overfuel if anything. Are you running the bigport AFM ? Annother thing to check is the resistance of the injectors. I think that the USDM bigport ran low res injectors with a resistor pack, but JDM smallports ran hi res injectors (no r...

Re: Why do I need a Fuel Pressure Regulator ?

Thefuel requirements of an engine vary with both rpm and load. If you can imagine your car doing a steady 50 mph on a level road in 4th gear, the engine is doing a certain amount of work and requires a certain amount of fuel. When you reach an uphill grade you need to open the throttle more to maint...

Re: 4age engine brackets

Can't answer that question. But I do recall that when installing a converted FWD 16V engine into an AE86, there was an alignment issue. FWD crank pulleys have a slightly different offset to RWD crank pulleys, and to make everything line up, you have to use all FWD pulleys or all RWD pulleys. That is...

Yes... one is a casting and the other is pressed steel. Note that the engine mounts have two parts... a pressed steel cover and a rubber "sandwich" with a fixing stud on either side. The engine mounts are the same both sides. Cheers... jondee86 PS: You might find this thread from another s...

Re: 4age engine brackets

Pretty sure that AE86 GTS (I think the same as SR5) OEM brackets will be your best bet. They bolt up with one bolt in conflict with another bracket, but easily fixed. Then you can bolt on the OEM AE86 engine mounts and that just leaves the mount to chassis rail part to be fabbed. This pic shows the ...

Yeah, six gears would be too many for me. It's more about being able to buy the bits needed for the conversion and having the gear lever sit in the stock location. I would be happy with four gears, and I have a T-40 and a 3.9 CW&P sitting in the garage. When the T-50 dies I am going to fit those...

That's the one. Trans is used behind the 4AC but will bolt up to a 4AGE as they are
both A-Series engines. You just need to figure out the flexplate by looking at the cars
mentioned above.

Morris Minor !!! Wouldn't have thought there would be many of those in the States :)

Interesting :) Running an auto has been in the back of my mind for a long time. Looked at fitting a later model auto from an Altezza but just too much work to get it installed in an AE86. Re: 4AGE automatic

A42DL as found in the SR5/AE85 with the 4AC engine. This will bolt right up to the 4AGE and the only problem you will have is locating a suitable 8-bolt flexplate. The 4AC has a 6-bolt crank and the 4AGE has an 8-bolt, but I am lead to believe that the flexplate from some of the FWD 4AGE Corollas wi...

So you have the same problem as this guy ?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYr9nloWzoM You can check the vacuum servo (actuator) by using a hand pump like a Mityvac and applying vacuum directly to the actuator. If the servo cannot hold vacuum and leaks down in just a few seconds, then the diaphragm...

But also note that I couldnt test it with the engine under load or in gear...i was just revving it in the garage. As you will have noticed while holding the revs steady, free revving only requires a very small throttle opening and because there is no load on the engine, there is very little fuel co...

Re: Weird 4A-GE idle problem

Hmmm... it seems that your AAV is operating much as expected except for the idle dropping to 500rpm sometimes. As totta crolla points out, when you add electrical load a small solenoid valve should open to allow extra air into the manifold via one of the small spigots on top of the throttlebody. Thi...

Re: Weird 4A-GE idle problem

Hmmm... my bad  I think that I read your post too quickly, and didn't pick up that your engine is actually doing the opposite to what it would if the AAV was blocked. To be clear; if the AAV is working the engine idles high on cold start and tapers down as the engine warms up. Normal is 2200rp...
