I searched the interwebz and couldn't find a single decent pic showing which way you should turn the dissy to change the ignition timing, so I made one... :D https://i.imgur.com/S00YYSC.jpg If you need to advance the timing but you are already maxed out on adjustment, you will need to re-stab the di...

Re: AE86 Best Suspension Setup

Ahhhh.... interesting :geek: I looked into dual rate setups a few years back but as I wasn't going to coilovers, I never studied it in depth. There would be a lot of juggling of spring lengths to get the effect that you wanted. You would need the 6kg spring to coilbind when you still had travel left...

Re: AE86 Best Suspension Setup

coilover up front with swift 3.5k main springs and 6k tenders. How does that work ? I interpret that as a long 3.5kg spring with a short 6kg spring on top. And that is going to work as a dual rate setup. Whereas I thought tenders are usually skinny low rate springs that are just in there to keep th...

Re: idle hunting, 20v shenanigans

Maybe the throttle opener is staying a bit open? The throttle opener is a vacuum servo, so when the engine is running and making vacuum, the throttle opener should be retracted. It should not be touching the throttle linkage. When the engine is turned off, the opener extends and holds the throttles...

Re: Help, car pinging

Pinging or pinking is usually heard as a distinct rattling sound when you give the car a lot of gas at low rpm's in a high gear. Not unlike the noise a paint rattle can makes when it ia almost empty and you shake it vigorously. Or perhaps if you imagine several very small people inside your engine w...

maybe on paper the roots is "bad", but i for one can't c it Compressed air is still compressed air no matter what kind of s/c you use. The only difference is how much noise, power and heat it takes to compress the air. A basic two-lobe Roots blower still gets the job done just fine, and i...

Re: Gonna start a build and see where it goes ===> TWINSCREW !!! :-p

If the guy is determined to stay with an OEM s/c he would benefit from hunting down a SC14 and adapting it to his engine. But still a basic Roots design and there are a lot of better designs around now. The law of diminishing returns bites pretty hard when you start pushing the SC12 way past its int...

any recommended steps to tackle first for the idle fluctuating up and down? TPS? Don't remember ever hearing of a fluctuating idle problem with a 20V.... as in the idle making a regular repeated high/low cycle. If the TPS is not set correctly you could get a rough (irregular) idle. Good idea to che...

Re: Jumper cable mishap burrrnnnnn

Copied this from somewhere else... First you need to test the coil. Test the primary side of the coil by taking the plug off the coil and checking the resistance between the two pins with your multimeter. You should get between 0.36 and 0.55 Ohms.To test the secondary side, take off the high tension...

... peak torque of 210#/ft @ 4200, while retaining the SC12.... Yusss.... does look like good numbers. I don't think I will anywhere near that as what you get out pretty much depends on how much you can squeeze into the cylinders. And the SC12 runs 1.2 litres/rpm whereas the S5-210 runs 0.94 litres...

Glad you are happy with the project thus far. It is looking great btw. Thanks :) It makes enough power now to be a fun ride, and that is really what this build is all about. Re: Why such a small sump?

Good question :) I don't know the exact answer, but I can think of a few reasons why the AE86 sump is the size/shape that it is. To keep the hood line low the engine has to sit as low as possible. Only this means the sump gets closer to the road, and it has to be tucked up high enough to be out of t...

Get under the car and grab the driveshaft with one hand either side of the hanger bearing. Check for movement up down and from side to side. If the shaft moves around a lot and easily, you might even be able to get it to "clunk" with a good heave. If it does, then that means that the rubbe...

Maybe you can rotate the cooler so that both hoses enter on top or at the

This is how I understand an oil cooler with a thermostat works... The thermostat is designed to open and close to regulate the engine oil temperature. When the oil is cold the thermostat is closed. When the temperature gets to around 185degF the thermostat starts to open and allow oil to flow to the...

Re: Car won’t idle

If your IACV has not been disabled (that is, still has the two water hoses connected) then on cold start the idle should go high (around 2000rpm) and slowly come down to normal idle as the engine warms up. If it does not do that, then the valve is not working. Read about it here... http://club4ag.co...

It's a folded sheet steel bracket and the holes will have been punched out. That's why
you get a bit of a taper on th holes and the brackets can be less than perfect. Just file
the holes out a fraction to get rid of the lip and slide that tube in there :-D

OK... if I'm reading this right, the long sleeve does go thru the top rear hole, and that is where I believe it should fit. There are really not too many possibilities for getting oil into the plug valley. If the cam cover gaskets are still soft and not compressed flat, they should seal OK. And the special rubber faced washers that go under the chrome nuts also have to be soft and not baked hard. Once they go hard they a...

unable to put the engine into diagnostic mode for any reason.
