Re: 20v Blacktop High Idle

Can't figure why your timing mark is so far out from a distance, so easier to revert to first principles to try and get the timing set correctly. 1. Remove plugs and set cylinder #1 to top dead centre on the compression stroke. Do this by putting a thin rod down the plug hole and rocking the engine ...

Re: 4age PCV how does it work

As I understand it, the PCV system creates a flow of air thru the engine. There is an inlet (usually from after the air filter) that allows filtered air to enter the valve cover, and an outlet controlled by the PCV valve. Thus the interior of the engine is "flushed" of blowby fumes by a mo...

Re: 4age PCV how does it work

This ^^^^ or if you have emissions testing, you can use a closed catchcan and run a hose from the catchcan to a hosetail in your filter mounting plate. That way you are mimicing the factory system of venting in front of the throttle plate. Connecting to the intake runners will not work as the runner...

Re: 4age PCV how does it work

These days it is becoming more common to talk in terms of kPa(absolute) when considering manifold pressure. Thus all pressures are stated relative to zero kPa which is a perfect vacuum. The old method of measuring manifold pressure by counting backwards from atmospheric pressure can be very confusin...

Re: 4age PCV how does it work

Also, why does the cam cover where the pcv outlet is have that complicated baffle system? To try and prevent actual oil from being picked up right? Correct. At 8000rpm engine speed the camshafts are doing 4000rpm and oil is flung off the cams in all directions. Without the baffle a significant amou...

Re: 4age PCV how does it work

I would guess that cam cover venting probably falls under the heading of "emissions" so not having the fumes go back thru the engine to be burned, might be a problem in a state that has emissions testing ? And either running an open vent or a catchcan, from time to time you get that nice h...

Re: 4age PCV how does it work

In the days before the PCV valve was invented, it was usual for the cam cover vent hose to run to a connection into the intake ducting in front of the throttle body. On the 16V 4AGE Toyota decided to save money on the hose by running it from the cam cover to the intake manifold. To allow the fumes t...

A proper screwed fitting is always going to be better than a hosetail or plain tube end with clamps. But if you do a proper job, two hose clamps will work OK. ]with the key on I get nothing at injectors with volt meter. If you can't get 12V from the injector clip to chassis ground, then you have a power supply problem. You will need to backtrack to the ignition switch as I am 99% sure that's where the 12V for the injectors comes from. The wire that you a...

Stethoscope to each injector while cranking and nothing. I'll check grounds but I suspect their good. Is the EFI relay what signals the injectors to fire or is their another relay I'm missing? Injectors get 12V when the ignition key is turned to ON. They are switched to ground momentarily by the EC...

is always going to be a superior option, especially if you have a modified engine.

Looks like you have all the big items covered. Depending on how long it has been since the head was off last, you will need a few gaskets. Might be worth buying a top end overhaul gasket set. It should contain everything you need plus a composite head gasket that you won't use. You can sell that. An...

Re: rear tire skipping under hard braking

Good chance that side shock is blown. I second this opinion :) Reason: Commercials tell us that worn shocks are dangerous because they increase the vehicles stopping distance. If so, the tire is not making such a good contact with the road surface because the tire is no longer following the road su...

Been having a problem in getting a bypass valve to work on my setup. After messing around with a Bosch valve and then the GFB 9301 valve, I have discovered that neither of them will work. They are designed for turbo or centrifugal s/c applications, not for a positive displacement s/c where the throt...

As said above, the ECU locks timing so that the spark occurs at 10deg before TDC according to the reading it gets from the crank angle sensor located inside the distributor. Then the distributor has to be calibrated to the crank so that the spark actually occurs when the crank is at 10deg before TDC...

It's not all doom and gloom. There are still a lot of events organised by car clubs where you can go and see what your car can do. Most low level events are single car like sealed hill climbs and street sprints. But there are multi-car sprints and classic racing events that don't require a cage. Cir...

The temptation to go to the dyno to see how much power you have is strong :geek: However, tuning WOT on the dyno puts a lot of stress on an engine, and will find any weak points in your preparation. For me, building and self-tuning a boosted engine is a big learning experience.I have not yet reached...

Raising the static compression ratio on a supercharged engine raises the EFFECTIVE COMPRESSION RATIO as shown on this chart... https://i.imgur.com/uUON5wm.png So @ 10psi of boost, going from 8.0:1 to 8.9:1 has the same effect on the ECR as increasing the boost by around 3psi. Good decision. I'm not a fan of spacers either, although I did have a set of 25mm
spacers that I used to make a set of 5-1/2" +27 OEM Toyota rims look better on the
car. Now I just use 6" or 6-1/2" RWD rims and forget about getting them flush :)
